Robert "Bob" Barnes, longtime head of
Waukegan, Illinois-based Local 301 and the
longest-serving union official in Illinois,
with John Bulgaro President and PEO of Local
294 Albany, NY.
Barnes, 86 was a Teamster for 61
years and a union officer for 52 years
retiring in 2005. He was born in Kentucky
and grew up in Obion County, Tennessee,
worked on farms, river barges and in
factories before he became a truck driver.
In 1944, he became a truck driver for Krema
Trucking out of North Chicago and joined the
Teamsters the same year. Barnes was a truck
driver for 18 years. He was elected trustee
of Local 301 in 1953 and appointed a
full-time business agent in 1962.
As a business agent and principal
officer, Barnes was known as a tough and
feisty negotiator who personally bargained
scores of contracts between Local 301 and
companies employing his members. |
